A project by Alizé Rose-May Monod and accomplices*
Dear A.,
From March 2023, I will take over the curation of the art space and meeting place Cabane B in Bern (for the spring programme). The Bern University of the Arts (Art Education) is in charge of the autumn programme. As a medium of my artistic practice, I see the curation as an act of invitation. An invitation to get together, exchange, collectivate…
The place Cabane B is located in the district Bümpliz-Bethlehem, right next to the railway station Bümpliz-Nord. It can be reached by public transport in just a few minutes from Bern central station. Cabane B itself is barrier-free. The toilet situation is unfortunately not barrier-free. The nearest accessible toilet is 400 meters away, in the building of the Bern University of the Arts (HKB) at Fellerstrasse 11. Just write me on Instagram if you have any further questions regarding accessibility.
Cabane B gets an asterisk * after the B with my curatorial project. The asterisk * is an attempt to mark the social constructs behind a space/the space Cabane B. The curatorial gaze is experiential, process-oriented, subjective and influenced by one’s situated knowledge.
* is also an allusion to gender discourses: is used in German in the gender-neutral and inclusive written language to break the binary construct. Cabane B* brings queer-feminist questions to the public space. * makes it clear that my curatorial decisions are anchored in a queer, intersectional discourse.
* reflects on a formal graphic level the themes of the curated content of Cabane B*. As an open-stayed footnote, it opens up space for further possibilities.
Visibility, resources sharing, accessibility, connections, collectivization of queer experiences… are important concepts in my practice and my life. I have invited curators and artists to intervene in the collective and interdisciplinary programme. Together we have invited others artists, collectives, cultural workers, journalists, activists… The curatorial composition is different for each project, which makes possible to bring a broader community together.
On March 9th, Nelson Irsapoullé (Geneva/Bern) opens the first season of Cabane B* with a performance, in dialogue with the transparency (text) works by Cheyenne Oswald (Basel/Bern), Martian M. Mächler (Zurich/Bern) and Andrea Cindy Raemy (Bern). On March 16th, niram (Bern) activates the space with her first EP release. In April, Rüzgâr Buşki (DE) will show already existing and new works, accompanied by a screen printing workshop. For June, Antoine Simeão Schalk (Geneva) is invited and new places for intimacy open up. In July, a collective and sporty kick-off takes place at B* with a lecture by Eva Tepest (DE), who invites their Dyke Sports Club to join us.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
♥ Ali
